Are you thinking about the next steps for your future career? Biotechnology entrepreneurship and innovation could be the right thing for you!

One of the greatest challenges for researchers is converting scientific discoveries and innovations into successful companies and medical solutions for patients. The "start-up" phase of biotechnology companies in Thailand is essentially a "valley of death" that has to be crossed by bio-entrepreneurs who often lack the experience and expertise necessary to convert their ideas into commercial products suitable for public consumption. In addition, venture capitalists (VCs) are increasingly reluctant to invest in early stage biotechnology companies, presenting another hurdle to researchers hoping to commercialize their innovations. In fact bio-entrepreneurs are not only related to the field of genetic engineering but it also could relate to the traditional bio-entrepreneurs which provide the highest income revenue for Thailand. There are: rice, rubber, cassava, maize, Palm oil, sugar cane and fruit. The biotechnology faculty of Assumption University we provide our candidate with sufficient knowledge both in the aspect of business and administration and scientific concept to understand the technical stand point of the products and develop a better product that will be more accepted by the market when needed. The faculty had obtained some patents from its innovation for example the production of rice milk. From this patent, the faculty had expended to its full extended to many other product such as rice milk ice cream, rice milk yogurt, rice milk yogurt ice cream, rice milk soap and rice milk cosmetic.

Leveraging the experience and expertise accumulated at Assumption University, the Global Bio-entrepreneurship Course aims to help new bio-entrepreneurs bring their scientific discoveries from bench to market.

With a world class set of faculty and lecturers from industry, academia ( the University of California at Davis) and venture capital. From the last 20 years of Biotechnology advancement bio-entrepreneurs, had generate 25 times more revenues than the IT industries. Most of these incomes were from traditional biotechnology.

WHAT IS BIOENTREPRENEURSHIP?

The term “BIOENTREPRENEURSHIP” is relatively new to the world outside USA. The USA is considered to be the birthplace of bioentrepreneurship. The bioentrepreneur has operated in the US for over three decades , even before the IT giants like Microsoft, Sun, Cisco came into being, Biotech companies like Genentech and Amgen were expanding through their research programs, competing and collaborating with the major pharmaceutical companies.

Persidis (1996) described bioentrepreneurship as the wealth creation derived from the application of the biosciences to the business context.

Bioentrepreneurs look for commercial value in the technologies that they apply in conducting research in the field of biotechnology.
